E Ola Mauloa - 32 Makahiki

By Pomai Bertelmann

"Grant life to our canoe.
May she live till she is aged, worn,

and the algae clings to her sides.
Grant prosperity to our canoe,
may this be a life gift from you."

In May 1993, our first canoe Mauloa was birthed at Keoneʻeleʻele, Hōnaunau. In May 2025 she celebrated 32 Makahiki. Hauʻoli Lā Hānau e Mauloa! Because of her, Makaliʻi and our Nā Kālai Waʻa voyaging ʻohana exist today. Mahalo nui Mauloa, for all you've gifted - your ʻike, your aloha, your presence.

Ke aloha nui

HPA Mei Day

Hawai‘i Preparatory Academy invited Nā Kālai Wa‘a to share Mauloa and her mo‘olelo with students and families at their He Wa'a He Moku He Moku He Wa'a May Day Celebration. It was a true blessing to spend time with the keiki - especially hearing them jam one of our favorites from our Makaliʻi Top Ten! Mahalo nui to everyone who made this possible from kumu to makua and all the magic in between.

Holokai Programs "Making Magic"

I ka wā ma mua, i ka wā ma hope

Thirty years ago, Makaliʻi was birthed at Kawaihae. Today, she still rests there, guiding us with her presence—reminding us how to mālama and aloha our waʻa, our moku, and each other. Since then, we’ve kept "making magic"—with birth and hānai of more waʻa like Hokuliʻiliʻi and Kamakani, and sailing with our extended waʻa ʻohana, like Laʻiʻōpua.

In May, our dedicated crew spent a week sailing with haumāna from Kanu o ka ʻĀina. We ended the week hearing how much these haumāna learned and loved their time on the waʻa—connecting classroom learning with real-life lessons on the ocean. It was one of those weeks that reminds us why this kuleana matters. The highlight? A few of them sailed on Kamakani, with Makaliʻi nearby, to greet Hōkūleʻa, Hikianalia, and Kōlea into Kawaihae before they headed to Hilo to "make ready" to sail to Kahiki and re-launch the Moananuiākea Voyage. Together on the pier we offered oli and aloha to the crew and wa'a for safe journey. Hopeful that we will see these haumāna sailing as future crew one day.

KAMEHAMEHA SCHOOLS KEA'AU

Dates: June - July

Location: Reeds Bay, Hilo

On February 4, 2025, Makaliʻi celebrated 30 years. Over this time, Makaliʻi has brought together an ʻohana, raised generations of voyagers, and voyaged to Kahiki, Satawal, and Mokumanamana. Through it all, we’ve learned that our success comes from the time spent with family and community to “make ready." The work ahead to complete repairs on our moku and waʻa is vast, but necessary to “make ready” for future voyages. All of this work is possible through your continued support. Mahalo!
