Student Sail Weekwas the final step in a year-long journey, where Naʻau ʻŌiwi and Kanu o ka ʻĀina High School students took to the waʻa. Seeing Makaliʻi, Hōkūliʻiliʻi, and our newest waʻa, Lauhoe, together was unforgettable. They practiced safety, kilo, pilina, and "sticking together" — all within sight of Puʻukoholā Heiau, where manō paʻele swam just outside Hālau Kukui all week. A powerful reminder that our kūpuna are always near. |
MELE MANAKA WITH HUI HILO ALOHA |
We were invited to join Hui Hilo Alohafor a manafull week of waʻa, ʻohana, and ʻikeduring Mele Manaka — a true huiʻanawhere we came together to share moʻolelo and our waʻa genealogies. While rigging up Mauloa on the street, people waved, gave shoutouts, or stopped just to watch. We were reminded of the importance of being present with our waʻa to create space for connection — and reconnection. Click the links belowto hear from the panelists who shared their mana‘o during Pae Aku Nā Waʻa – Sharing Voyaging Traditionsday.

Makaliʻi has a long history with the annual festival that began with aunty Kanani Kahalehoe. She was a dedicated Hāna Kalo Festival organizing committee member and of course longtime Makaliʻi crew member and much more. Although she has transitioned to the realm of our ancestors this year was no different — in true Aunty Kanani style, she volun-told us to show up! A small crew from our team made the trip, including Keala Kahuanui, who represented our Hanauna Mau food provisioning program and shared its moʻolelo with the Hāna community. We love and miss you aunty Kanani!

On February 4, 2025, Makaliʻi celebrated 30 years. Over this time, Makaliʻi has brought together an ʻohana, raised generations of voyagers, and voyaged to Kahiki, Satawal, and Mokumanamana. Through it all, we’ve learned that our success comes from the time spent with family and community to “make ready." The work ahead to complete repairs on our moku and waʻa is vast, but necessary to “make ready” for future voyages. All of this work is possible through your continued support. Mahalo! |
